History and development of the airport

Agadir-Al Massira Airport was opened on 19 December 1991 to replace the old Agadir-Inezgane airport, hemmed in by the city and later turned into a military base. Built by Bouygues as part of the Kingdom's major construction programmes, it takes its name from the Green March and gave the Souss region a modern gateway to the Atlantic.

The single terminal, covering around 26,550 m², was designed to handle 3 million passengers a year. A major extension project led by ONDA plans to raise capacity to 7 million passengers, with a new 45,000 m² building and a doubling of vehicle parking.

Today, Agadir Airport handles over 3 million passengers a year and ranks third nationally, behind Casablanca-Mohammed V and Marrakech-Menara. A year-round seaside resort, Agadir attracts travellers seeking sun in both winter and summer. To continue the journey to the imperial cities, Marrakech Airport is under three hours' drive from Agadir.
